The US Embassy in Cairo announced in a post on its Facebook page on Tuesday that its consular officers will deny tourist visa applications if they believe the primary purpose of travel is to give birth in the United States to obtain US citizenship for newborn children, stressing “Birth tourism is not permitted."

The announcement reiterates regulations imposed in January 2020 by the US Department of State aimed at curbing birth tourism.

These rules empower consular officers to deny B-1/B-2 tourist visas to applicants if there is reason to believe that the primary purpose of their travel is to give birth in the United States.

Applicants suspected of intending to engage in birth tourism are required to demonstrate that they are travelling for legitimate medical reasons and have the financial means to cover all associated costs.
